The More Flexible You are the More Control You Have
- Sonia Handziuk
It’s quite the interesting paradigm (NLP presupposition ), the more flexible we are, the more options we have, and the greater influence/control we have over situations.
This reminds me of the fable of The Oak and the Willow (based on Aesop’s Fable of, The Oak and the Reed):
In a lush green forest, a mature, solid Oak tree stood tall and proud. Beside it, a beautiful Willow tree swayed gently in the breeze. The Oak looked down at the Willow and scoffed, “Look at you, so thin and weak. You bend with the wind. I stand firm and unshaken.”The Willow humbly replied, “Strength isn’t always about standing tall. Sometimes, it’s about knowing when to bend.” Seasons passed, and one year, a ferocious storm hits the forest. The wind howled and the rain poured like never before. Trees shook, animals hid, and the storm raged for hours. The oak tree stands its ground and resists the wind with all its might. The willow sways and bends with the gusts. When the sun rose the next morning, the forest was quiet. The mighty Oak Tree had been uprooted and lay broken on the ground. the Willow Tree still stood — bent but not broken. Flexibility allowed the Willow Tree to survive, a little bumped and bruised and much wiser. Pride made the Oak Tree resist the storm and destroy itself with righteousness.
With Flexibility comes stretching, growth, possibility. With adamant rigidity and righteousness can come destruction.
Try this for yourself. Take a pencil and gently try to bend it. What happens, has the pencil changed? No, it hasn’t. Try to bend the pencil again, but this time try harder, try with more force. What happens? Did your pencil break? Next, taking an elastic band , stretch it gently.
Where are you too rigid and immovable that it is compromising your health, your relationships, your finances…?
Where could you be more flexible? Flexibility equals choice and influence. Rigidity, actually limits your options and reduces your power.
